stephen murray crash video

The following capsule reviews, listed alphabetically, will give you an idea of the caliber of films unreeling locally. Please refer to the movie schedule for theaters and show times.

The films are graded as follows: Very Good, (A); Good, (B); Fair, (C); Poor, (D); Turkey (F). Those with (NP) have not been previewed. (To locate a Web site, go to www.google.com and type in the film's title.)

ACROSS THE UNIVERSE: (B+) An ensemble cast - including Evan Rachel Wood ("Thirteen"), Salma Hayek ("Desperado") and rocker Bono - is featured in this music-driven love story that's set in the 1960s, looks at protests of that era and delivers its story and messages via inspired Beatles songs, most written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney. Julie Taymor (Broadway's "The Lion King") directed the creatively rendered picture, which liberally borrows elements from "Moulin Rouge," "Pink Floyd The Wall," "Rent" and - especially - "Hair." Those willing to just go along with the innovative work should find it a magical musical tour. (133 minutes) Drug use, brief nudity, sexual elements, violent images, language. (PG-13)

THE ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES BY THE COWARD ROBERT FORD: (B+) This artistically rendered frontier tale, starring Brad Pitt, looks at the famous outlaw during his final days as he grows tired of his fame and becomes increasingly fearful of his enemies and paranoid toward those closest to him. This unconventional cinematic work, directed by New Zealand filmmaker Andrew Dominik ("Chopper"), moves along at a studied pace and lacks traditional elements of the Western genre. Viewers will either love or hate the visually striking Western. (160 minutes) Strong violence, sexual references. (R)

BALLS OF FURY: (D) Cult favorite Christopher Walken ("Wedding Crashers") wears a Fu Manchu outfit and struggles with lame lines in this unfunny spoof of the Bruce Lee martial-arts classic "Enter the Dragon." In this film, players from around the globe gather for a lethal ping-pong competition. Comic-turned-actor George Lopez ("Real Women Have Curves") and Jason Scott Lee ("Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story") co-star in the waste-of-time slapstick comedy, directed by Robert Ben Garant ("Reno 911!: Miami"). (90 minutes) Crude and sex-related humor, language (PG-13)

BECOMING JANE: (B+) In this romantically charged biographical drama, Anne Hathaway ("The Devil Wears Prada") plays Jane Austen in a story that shows the author's love life before she became famous. James McAvoy ("The Last King of Scotland") co-stars in this charming British import. (120 minutes) Brief nudity, mild language. (PG)

THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM: (B+) Jason Bourne (Matt Damon) hits the ground running and never slows down during this pulse-pounding conspiracy thriller, which is the third in the series - after "The Bourne Identity" (2002) and "The Bourne Supremacy" (2004) - based on the novels by Robert Ludlum. This time, the lethal operative is trying to piece together his past and being chased by the most deadly agents in the Central Intelligence Agency. Joan Allen and Julia Stiles are also back in the fast-moving tale. (111 minutes) Some strong scenes of violence, adult themes. (PG-13)

THE BRAVE ONE: (B) In this dark-themed thriller, a woman (Jodie Foster of "Panic Room") is beaten and sees her fiancé (Naveen Andrews of TV's "Lost") murdered by thugs during a savage attack. She then becomes a vigilante - a la Charles Bronson in "Death Wish" - and embarks on a deadly revenge mission in this unsettling work, co-starring Terrence Howard ("Hustle & Flow") and directed by Irish filmmaker Neil Jordan ("The Crying Game"). (119 minutes) Very strong violence, harsh four-letter profanity, drug use, brief sex, nudity. (R)

THE COMEBACKS: (NP) Supporting actor David Koechner ("Balls of Fury") graduates to a starring role in this comedy that spoofs inspirational sports movies. Carl Weathers ("Rocky") co-stars. The distributor declined to screen the film in advance for reviewers. (84 minutes) Crude and sexual content, some drug references. (PG-13)

THE DARJEELING LIMITED: (B) Owen Wilson ("Wedding Crashers"), Adrien Brody ("The Pianist") and Jason Schwartzman ("Marie Antoinette") star in this eccentric comedy about three American brothers who have not spoken to each other in a year and plan to bond during a misguided train trip across India. Wes Anderson ("Rushmore") co-wrote and directed the decidedly offbeat, creatively rendered picture, which stresses how we are all on a journey through life. Bill Murray and Anjelica Huston, who previously appeared in the Anderson films "Rushmore" and "The Royal Tenenbaums," respectively, make cameo appearances. (91 minutes) Harsh four-letter profanity, sexual elements, adult themes. (R)

EASTERN PROMISES: (B+) Director David Cronenberg and actor Viggo Mortensen previously teamed on the intriguing "A History of Violence," which like this film deals with themes such as identity and duality. In the intense thriller, a ruthless Russian mafia hit man (Mortensen) is touched by the innocence of a London midwife who is marked for death after she accidentally learns some mob secrets. The picture seems certain to generate plenty of discussions about an extended action scene in which Mortensen's character is nude as he fights two assassins in a bath house. (96 minutes) Brutal and bloody violence, some graphic sexuality, nudity, harsh four-letter profanity. (R)

ELIZABETH: THE GOLDEN AGE: (C+) Cate Blanchett ("The Aviator") and Geoffrey Rush ("Shine") return in an unremarkable sequel to "Elizabeth," the 1998 art-house hit. This film follows England's Virgin Queen in her later years as she wrestles with her sexual desires and embarks on a war with Spain. Clive Owen ("Sin City") co-stars as writer-poet-explorer Sir Walter Raleigh, who infuriates the queen by secretly marrying a woman who is 11 years his junior and one of the Elizabeth's ladies in waiting. Blanchett delivers a fiery performance, but even her fine work can't bring full-bodied life to this TV-level film. (114 minutes) Violence, some sexuality, nudity, adult themes. (PG-13)

FEAST OF LOVE: (B-) A gifted ensemble - including Morgan Freeman ("Million Dollar Baby"), Selma Blair ("Hellboy"), Greg Kinnear ("Little Miss Sunshine"), Radha Mitchell ("Finding Neverland") and Jane Alexander (HBO's "Tell Me You Love Me") - brings energy to this multi-character drama about some adults in Oregon looking for romance, seeking happiness, rebuilding their lives and dealing with sorrow. Gifted filmmaker Robert Benton ("Kramer vs. Kramer") directed the picture, which never offers any major revelations but drifts along on the strength of the cast members and provides some touching moments. It's based on the novel by Charles Baxter. (102 minutes) Strong sexual content, nudity, adult themes, harsh four-letter profanity. (R)

FEEL THE NOISE: (C) In this musical melodrama, starring Giancarlo Esposito ("The Usual Suspects"), a Harlem rapper (Omarion Grandberry) travels to Puerto Rico to find his father. Once there, he discovers Reggaeton, a hot blend of hip-hop, reggae and Latin beats. Quality rating based on Web and wire-service reports. (87 minutes) Sexual content, violence, some drug use, language, adult themes. (PG-13)

THE FINAL SEASON: (B-) Sean Astin (the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy), Rachael Leigh Cook ("Nancy Drew") and Powers Boothe ("Sin City") star in this feel-good, fact-based tale about a high-school baseball coach at a tiny Iowa high school who leads his players against a much bigger school in order to win a 20th state championship. David M. Evans ("The Sandlot") directed this sports picture, which tries to push all the right buttons to make watching it an uplifting experience. Quality rating based on Web and wire-service reports. (118 minutes) Language, thematic elements, teen smoking. (PG)

FOR THE BIBLE TELLS ME SO: (B-) Debuting director Daniel G. Karslake designed this documentary to show how the religious right has used its interpretation of the holy book to condemn homosexuality. Those attacks on people coming out of the closet have sometimes caused tragic results. Quality rating based on Web and wire-service reports. (95 minutes) (Unrated)

THE GAME PLAN: (C+) Wrestler-turned-actor Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson ("The Gridiron Gang") puts his action-filled past behind to star in this family picture that uses all sorts of sentimental tricks. Kyra Sedgwick (TV's "The Closer") is featured in this Walt Disney comedy about a football superstar whose hard-living lifestyle is curtailed after he discovers he has an 8-year-old daughter. You guessed it: He soon learns about the really important things in life. (110 minutes) Thematic elements. (PG)

GONE BABY GONE: (B) This gritty and unsettling drama, starring Casey Affleck ("The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford"), Morgan Freeman ("Million Dollar Baby"), Michelle Monaghan ("The Heartbreak Kid") and Ed Harris ("Pollock"), follows the personal and professional pressures put upon two young Boston private eyes (Affleck and Monaghan) hired by family members to hunt for a kidnapped 4-year-old girl. Actor-turned-filmmaker Ben Affleck directed the bleak tale, and the script is based on a novel by Dennis Lehane, who also wrote the similarly downbeat "Mystic River." (115 minutes) Violence, drug content, harsh four-letter profanity. (R)

GOOD LUCK CHUCK: (C-) Comic-actor Dane Cook ("Mr. Brooks") and Jessica Alba ("Fantastic Four") team in this romantic comedy about a bed-hopping guy who, in order to marry the girl of his dreams, must break the spell that makes him irresistible to women for one-night stands. Quality rating based on Web and wire-service reports. (96 minutes) Sequences of strong sexual content, crude dialogue, nudity, harsh four-letter profanity, some drug use. (R)

HALLOWEEN: (B-) Rocker-turned-filmmaker Rob Zombie ("The Devil's Rejects") directed this grisly tale in which he remixes John Carpenter's original (1978). The first section shows what transformed the young Michael Myers (Daeg Faerch) into a serial killer, while the second half, which is surprisingly short on scares, closely follows the original. British actor Malcolm McDowell ("A Clockwork Orange") replaces the late Donald Pleasance as Dr. Sam Loomis, the haunted psychologist trying to stop Myers' reign of terror. Wrestler-turned-actor Tyler Mane ("X-Men") portrays Myers as an adult. (107 minutes) Strong brutal and bloody violence, terror throughout, sexual content, nudity and harsh four-letter profanity. (R)

THE HEARTBREAK KID: (B) Good taste quickly goes out the window in this politically incorrect remake of the comedy about a newlywed (Ben Stiller) who leaves his wife for another woman while on his honeymoon. Bobby and Peter Farrelly, who previously teamed with Stiller on "There's Something About Mary," co-directed the picture, which has Stiller's character marrying a beautiful-but-annoying blonde (model-turned-actress Malin Akerman, who looks like Cameron Diaz's twin sister) and then pursuing a down-to-earth brunette (Michelle Monaghan of "Mission: Impossible III"). The Farrelly brothers once again litter the screen with gross gags, particularly in the final moments when Stiller's new wife handles an emergency-aid situation with a squatting technique that will tickle some viewers and disturb others. (110 minutes) Strong sexual elements, nudity, drug use, adult humor. (R)

THE HUNTING PARTY: (B) In this darkly rendered tale, starring Richard Gere ("The Hoax"), Terrence Howard ("The Brave One") and Diane Kruger ("Troy"), three journalists take an unauthorized trip to Bosnia to interview the country's top war criminal and are mistaken for a CIA hit squad. Richard Shepard ("The Matador") directed the fact-based picture and captures the journalistic excitement generated by breaking a big story. (103 minutes) Harsh four-letter profanity, violent content. (R)

IN THE SHADOW OF THE MOON: (A-) Buzz Aldrin, Jim Lovell and other astronauts discuss blasting off to the moon during NASA's Apollo missions and share their memories of that incredible experience. The previously unseen footage is often breathtaking. (100 minutes) Mild language, brief violent images. (PG)

IN THE VALLEY OF ELAH: (B+) Oscar-winners Tommy Lee Jones ("The Fugitive"), Charlize Theron ("Monster") and Susan Sarandon ("Dead Man Walking") team in this intense and unsettling mystery drama about a father's quest to find his son, a soldier who disappeared shortly after returning home from a tour of Iraq. Paul Haggis ("Crash") directed the sure-to-be-controversial picture that criticizes the government's handling of the Iraq war and examines the emotional pain of the men and women sent to fight in it. (114 minutes) Violent and disturbing content, harsh four-letter profanity, some nudity and sex. (R)

INTO THE WILD: (A-) In this fact-based drama, starring Emile Hirsch ("Alpha Dog"), an idealistic 22-year-old man rejects materialism, leaves his family behind and embarks on a journey into the Alaskan wilderness. There, the free-spirited adventurer ultimately faces elements too strong to overcome. Sean Penn ("The Pledge") directed the visually striking, emotionally compelling picture, which is based on the best-selling book by Jon Krakauer. (140 minutes) Harsh four-letter profanity, drug use, nudity, adult themes. (R)

Recent photographs of the mountain bike and BMX champion Tara Llanes show her in a world of white: white sheets, hospital gown and neck brace. Her thumbs-up pose and smile gave little hint that she was paralyzed below the waist, a condition her doctors say is probably permanent.

Malcolm Fearon/Bliss Images
Tara Llanes racing in Sonoma, Calif. She has been paralyzed below the waist since a crash Sept. 1.
Llanes was third in the standings of the Jeep King of the Mountain World Professional Mountain Bike Championships going into the final event of the year, Sept. 1 at Beaver Creek Resort in Colorado. While dueling the eventual winner Jill Kintner in the semifinal round of the BMX-style elimination race, Llanes had a violent headfirst crash that broke her neck and back, and caused major trauma to her lower spinal column.

She was airlifted to Denver Health Medical Center where she had a broken lower neck vertebrae stabilized before undergoing seven hours of surgery. She had surgery again Sept. 7.

Kintner, who was leading the race when the accident occurred, said in an e-mail message, "The section she crashed in was very technical, a high-speed rhythm section where you had to be really focused coming into it."

Kintner has avoided watching a video of the accident. Despite the crash, Llanes still placed third over all in the King of the Mountain final standings. Anneke Beerten of the Netherlands placed first, and Kintner was second. In past years, Llanes, an X Games medalist, had won two national titles in BMX Supercross and was the 2006 USA Cycling national downhill title winner.

It had been a season full of injuries for Llanes, 30, who is one of mountain biking's oldest female competitors.

In the first King of the Mountain race, Aug. 4 in Park City, Utah, Llanes was ejected from her bike, falling 15 feet and landing off the course on her back on a pile of rocks and boulders. She was carried off the course, yet came back for the consolation round, pale and sweating and in obvious pain.

"I've been hurt more this year than ever before in my career," Llanes said after the race, adding that she probably would not participate in the Dew Tour's event on Sept. 20 in Salt Lake. "I just need to recover a bit still."

But less than three weeks after the Park City event, Llanes was in China for the BMX Supercross World Cup at the 2008 Olympic site in Laoshan. She failed to advance past the preliminaries, but said then that she would continue to try to qualify for the United States team for the 2008 Olympics, where the sport of BMX will make its debut.

Instead, she is recovering from a life-altering injury. After spending three weeks at the Denver hospital, Llanes has been transferred to Craig Hospital in Englewood, Colo., to begin a seven-week physical-therapy program. No one close to her will comment on whether she is aware of the seriousness of her condition, saying only that she is "upbeat and positive."

Her coach and close friend, James Herrera, said: " Tara is excited to get to Craig and begin her therapy."

Herrera said the nonprofit Craig Hospital is considered a top spinal cord rehabilitation hospital.

The hospital is where Stephen Murray, another injured BMX champion, is undergoing treatment. He was paralyzed below the shoulders when he crashed June 22 in the Dew Tour's Baltimore stop while attempting his signature trick, a double-back flip.

Llanes's family and friends have set up a fund for expenses that will not be covered by insurance, like travel and therapy. Information can be found at
