rupert evans
Just as I was finishing the following up, I got an email from a reader pointing me to a story from the good guys on DarkHorizons. They posted theirs a few minutes before us, but we got our email before the posted and from the quote DH uses in theirs it seems like we may both have gotten similar messages from the same scooper (and to my mind thus makes the whole thing slightly more suspicious).
It seems Warner Brothers has added a new name into the Justice League movie casting mix. A few minutes ago we received a message from a source claiming to have the inside track on who their looking at for the part of Superman. We already know Brandon Routh won't be involved, and our source says the guy who may end up being in the blue tights is Rupert Evans.
Our scooper claims to have been a part of some of the JLA casting sessions in London's Soho. She says of the actors in attendance, "I've heard today that one of them has been cast, or I guess is about to be cast, as Superman. I don't remember his audition, but I was out of the room for a lot of it. Anyway, the guy everyone is talking about is called Rupert Evans."
Evans is probably best remembered from Hellboy, where he played agent John Myers. Since then the 30-year-old actor hasn't done much, but he does have that all-American boyscout look you'd presumably want in a Superman... even though he's not an American. Personally, I think they should cancel the whole thing or make it animated if they aren't using Brandon Routh and Christian Bale as Superman and Batman, but Warners sees dollar signs and this may be the discount actor they hire as Superman in order to keep production costs down and profit margins high. I'm sure he'll be super.
A day does not go by without someone receiving a scoop regarding casting for the new Justice League of America film. Just this morning, I met a kid outside while walking my dog who claimed to be "close to a few studio execs." I asked him if he knew anything about Justice League, and he claimed to know who had been cast as Batman. "Oh really?" I replied. "Who?" That's when he smirked, spit something out of his mouth and said, "Your Mothah! Oh, Snaps!" Gotta love New York. Anyway, the latest rumors come to us from Dark Horizons, who received an anonymous email from someone claiming to be "in the know" when it came to JLA casting sessions over in London. And what do they know, you ask?
Well, for starters, they claim British actor Rupert Evans has landed the part of Superman in the live-action flick. Here's a quote from the email (which may or may not be legit): "Anyway after going through a whole bunch of British actors, I heard today that one of them has been cast as Superman. Anyway, the guy everyone is talking about is called Rupert Evans." ANYway, who knows what the deal is -- right after that sentence, the person claimed Jesus Christ himself had been cast as Martian Manhunter ... SO take it all with a grain of salt. (Actually I'm kidding about the Christ stuff, but wouldn't that be an interesting move?) Evans starred in the 2004 film Hellboy, and he certainly has those cute, boy-ish, All-American looks ... except for the fact that he's not American, he's British. Which brings me to my next question: Are you cool with a Brit playing Superman? Of course he won't speak with a British accent, but would it bother you hardcore Supes fans at all if you knew the actor portraying him was not American? Think about it over coffee, debate with your co-workers and leave a comment.
[edit] Biography
Evans trained at the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art. He has secured a variety of television credits in the UK, including the BBC sitcom My Family, the drama Crime and Punishment starring John Simm and Home and Away. He also starred in ITV's High Stakes sitcom with Rupert Wilson, and Paradise Heights, the BBC drama starring Neil Morrissey.
In 2003 he got his first major film role when he landed the role of FBI Agent John Myers in director Guillermo del Toro's adaptation of the Mike Mignola comic book Hellboy. Evans will next star as King Richard, the head of a fictional royal family, in The Palace.[1]
